A balanced lifestyle includes relationships, fitness, health, and emotional well-being. While focusing on a healthy lifestyle by exercising and eating right is important, it’s also important to enjoy pizza and ice cream with your friends, laugh hard, and get off routine sometimes.
Summer is a time when you may be going on more adventures, attending more gatherings with your favorite people, and having extra fun. This is a time to lean into being more present and fully enjoying life because relationships and emotional health are a big part of your overall health, too.

5 Ways to Increase the Balance in Your Life
1. Turn off your phone
It’s hard to be truly present with people when your phone is buzzing with social notifications, texts and emails. Feeling so connected all the time can be overwhelming and even make us less present with people. That’s why a digital detox or setting your phone to do not disturb can be extremely helpful in helping you focus on the present moment in front of you.
If a “digital detox” like turning your phone off for a day or two is too much, simply set your phone to do not disturb the next time you're catching up with a friend or attending a social gathering.
2. Move with others
You may find yourself on more trips or just wanting to catch up with a friend you haven’t seen in a while this summer. Why not move while you get some quality time in? Moving with others decreases stress and boosts your endorphins, so if you’re also moving your body, that’s double the endorphins, right?
If you’re on a trip, find a local walking trail or an activity to try together like tennis or pickleball. Additionally, even inviting your friend to your local Snap Fitness is a great way to connect and get those feel-good endorphins.
3. Pack healthy snacks or bring something healthy to share
Whether you are on a road trip or running errands, keeping a healthy snack or two on hand is crucial to avoid “hanger.” When you get hungry, it can be difficult to be present and chipper. You may be quite the opposite—we’ve all been there!
A nutritious snack will provide you with the energy to stay present and feel your best while you’re out enjoying life. Generally, an energizing and sustaining snack is going to include protein, fat, and/or fiber. 4. Stay hydrated
Our body is made up of about 60% water, making it essential to our health. Water is involved in many important functions in our body and helps us be our best each day. Being dehydrated can throw off your dopamine and serotonin levels and make you irritable and anxious, so hydrating can literally calm your nerves.
It’s recommended to drink 8 glasses of water each day, which can be difficult to meet. A few easy tips to drink more water even If you’re on the go is to carry a big water bottle with you and infuse with flavor by adding sliced lemon, mint leaves or berries. Water can also found in foods we eat. Veggies and fruits like watermelon, oranges and tomatoes contain high amounts of water.
5. Practice daily gratitude
A sunny outlook is also good for your overall health and mood. In positive psychology research, gratitude is strongly and consistently associated with greater happiness. Gratitude helps people feel more positive emotions, enjoy good experiences, improve their health, deal with adversity, and build strong relationships.
Try taking a moment each day to recognize 3 blessings in your life, big or small. This taps into your positive emotions and instantly lowers stress levels, helping you be more present and positive.
